As if we din't have enough going on, I was scheduled to have surgery two days before we moved.
Around Christmas, mama noticed that it looked like I had a very large adam's apple. At my yearly checkup, my doctor said it wasn't my adam's apple, but actually a thyroglossal cyst that had formed around a piece that had separated from my thyroid before I was born.
These cysts are fairly common, but sometimes they are attached to the tongue, so we decided to have it removed to reduce the risk of later infection.
We had to get up very early to get to the hospital. Once we were there, I got undressed and we waited. They asked if I just wanted to go back to the operating room awake or if I wanted to take some medicine to make me sleepy. I chose the medicine and in no time I was acting pretty loopy and silly. Finally, I got so tired, I just went to sleep and they wheeled me away.
My surgery took about an hour and a half. They took out all of the cyst and part of my hyoid bone. They do that because there's a chance the cyst might grow back if they don't. I woke up and was a little weepy, but mostly tired. I perked up after they brought me in some juice. The main concern for getting released after this surgery is whether or not the patient has dificulty swallowing. After my 4th glass of juice, they cleared me for release.
I got a first class ride to the car in this cool wagon. And papa stopped and got me a milkshake on the way home! I rested for the day and was back to normal in a few days. The doctor did most of his stitched inside and then glued the skin on my neck so I don't have a big scar. Two weeks later, it's still a little swollen, but it doesn't hurt at all. My biggest regret is that they didn't let me spend the night. I was really hoping to stay in the hospital for a while.
